Course overview

Therapeutic radiographers use cutting edge technology to treat conditions such as cancer – a rewarding career that’s never been more important to society. On this course you’ll learn to work with patients and other professionals to deliver a range of advanced radiotherapy treatment and planning techniques. Through a combination of classroom theory and practical experience, both on-campus and through clinical placements at local NHS hospitals, you’ll develop your ability to think critically, analyse data and evaluate treatments, whilst maintaining good communication and empathy skills. Our outstanding on-campus facilities include a Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT), where you’ll gain confidence in preparation for your clinical placements in local radiotherapy departments. As a student you’ll also be able to use our AI-enabled simulated ward environment, digital Anatomage Table, treatment planning system and physical condition simulation equipment, as well as benefitting from our dedicated clinical placement lead who will visit you on your placements, so you always feel supported.

Whilst studying for the BSc (Hons) Radiography (Radiotherapy and Oncology) you will learn how to work under pressure using advanced equipment, and make critical decisions under significant time restraints whilst maintaining good communication and empathy skills.

During your course, you will also benefit from Virtual Environment Radiotherapy Training (VERT), a facility that is used on the course to develop learning and prepare you for clinical placements. This provides a safe environment to practice, without the time pressures of a clinical setting. A high-performance digital X-Ray suite, including direct radiography (DR) room, is available, along with a mock ward to simulate the hospital setting. With on-campus Ultrasound, MRI, X-ray, and Fluoroscopy you can expect to be well prepared for your first clinical placements with Health Sciences University hospital partners in the NHS. Together with small group working, practical sessions, and lectures you will be able to take advantage of working on placement at local providers seeing the real world working without the pressures of a busy NHS department. The BSc (Hons) Radiography (Radiotherapy and Oncology) degree provides a route into a rewarding career as a therapeutic radiographer. One in two of the population will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and so radiotherapy treatment, which uses high energy x-rays to treat tumours, has never been more important. Up to a third of people with cancer will need radiotherapy and will rely on people like you to provide it. Studying the BSc (Hons) Radiography (Radiotherapy and Oncology) course will equip you with all the skills and knowledge you need to become a fully qualified therapeutic radiographer and you’ll develop the ability to think critically, analyse data, evaluate treatments and empathise with the patients in your care. On completion of the course, you will have the ability to synthesise evidence from current practice and research to develop in-depth critical knowledge and understanding of the therapeutic profession. This BSc (Hons) Radiography (Radiotherapy and Oncology) course will enable you to learn how to work under pressure using advanced equipment, and make split-second critical decisions.
